A Chromatic Fantasy
Sunday January 18, 2015
Enjoy the exotic sounds of 17th century Neapolitan chromatic music in meantone tuning performed on a fabulous John Phillips copy of a 17th century Italian harpsichord. This program explores the world of chromatic keyboard composition through the works of Merula ("Intonazione Chromatica de Terza Tono"), Frescobaldi ("Canzona Terza"), Soncino ("Fantasy Chromatica"), Cabanilles ("Pasacalles de 4th tono"), Trabaci ("Canzona Settima"), and other similar pieces. The music is imbued with wonderful dance rhythms, contrapuntal writing and inevitable harmonic surprises. The Neapolitan music will be interlaced with the more familiar sounds of Purcell, Byrd, Farnaby, Bull and the famous prolific composer "Anon"!
